One Minute Decluttering Home Hacks

one minute decluttering hacks

Are you overwhelmed by the thought of decluttering your home? Today, I’m sharing some one-minute hacks and tips to get the process started.

All of the hacks and tips I am sharing today take one minute or less. And can be integrated into your daily routine.

1 – One Minute to Declutter Clothes

Let’s jump in. Whenever I put on an outfit and don’t like how I look in it, I don’t hang it back up!

It could be the item doesn’t fit right, or nothing goes with it. But if I find myself taking it off repeatedly, I know something is wrong.

Instead of hanging it back up in the closet, I will put that item straight into the declutter box.

If I were to hang that item back up, I would likely be in the same situation in a week or so.

It takes less than one minute to take off the item and put it straight into your declutter box.

2 – Set Up a Place for Declutter Stuff

Set up a spot for your decluttered items. This should take less than a minute to do.

I have a basket that I keep in my closet. Whenever I come across something we are no longer using, I add it to the basket.

It takes less than a minute to set a designated box for donations.

I keep it in my closet, but you could put a bag in the back of your car if that makes it easier to get things out of your house quicker. You could also put it in a box in your garage, by your back door, or by your front door.

Whatever works for you, but setting this up helps to keep us organized and ready to declutter.

3 – Declutter the Fridge

Another place that can usually be decluttered in under a minute is the refrigerator. Just look through it. Remove all the leftovers that are no longer good and way past their due date. Also, throw out all the little sauce packets that you’re probably never going to eat.

Get rid of all the vegetables that have become moldy.

I usually try to do this whenever I go grocery shopping. I take one extra minute right before I go to pull all those things out, put them in the sink, or put them in the trash or recycle bin.

If you get focused about it, it can usually take less than a minute.

4 – Declutter During Laundry Time

A great one minute declutter time is when you’re doing laundry. If you see something that is, terribly stained, ripped, or in really terrible condition, get rid of it.

I will declutter that item immediately. It takes less than one minute to pull these things out.

This could be a holy sock of my own or something that looks terrible.  This works especially great for kids’ clothing. Often, when doing laundry, I will see things that are ripped or that they have grown out of.

Instead of waiting for a huge declutter day, I will pull those items out right away. It takes less than a minute to throw them into the pile to get rid of. And I do want to mention that when things are stained or ripped, this is stuff that I throw away because it cannot be donated.

5 – One Minute Mail Declutter

Another great one-minute decluttering hack is going through mail and paper things immediately. As soon as the mail comes into our mailbox, I open it and see if I need it. If not, it’s straight into the recycling bin.

This takes less than one minute, and I deal with it immediately every day.

I don’t have a big pile of papers waiting for me. This is one of the easiest things to deal with right away.

6 – Declutter Replacements

Whenever we are replacing an item, I always try to remember to get rid of the old item right away.

Here is the perfect example: I just bought my oldest son new flip-flops for the summer. It takes less than one minute to bring the new ones in, pick out the old ones, and throw them in the trash.

However, this can apply to almost everything in your home. If you are on a maintenance level with decluttering, as soon as a new item arrives, the old one goes out.

7 – Trash Bag Decluttering

Let’s be honest, not everything can be donated. A great one minute decluttering hack is to grab a trash bag and head into an area with a lot of trash.

For us, that is my kid’s room. Because they bring so many things home from school, I can usually fill up at least half a trash bag.

They brought Papers and little doodads home from school, and just left on the floor or threw in a drawer. It’s a great way to clean out quickly.

And sometimes it’s just worth our mental sanity to throw something away rather than spend hours pondering what we should be doing with these items.

Run through your home, gather all the trash, and take it out of your home.

And while this might not seem like decluttering, it is!  This simple hack can get the ball rolling and inspire you to let go of more things that aren’t trash.

8 – One Minute Declutter Tasks

Go through and get rid of all those socks that are really worn out.

Maybe they have holes, they were uncomfortable, they never fit right, there are so many reasons! So many things can be decluttered quite quickly if you focus on one tiny area.

Sock drawer, underwear drawer, jackets. You could focus on getting rid of all the jackets you didn’t wear the previous season or that don’t quite fit as well as they used to.

Check all the pens and declutter all the ones that don’t work very well or are running out of ink.

All of these jobs can take less than a minute to go through.

Sometimes, we let ourselves get completely overwhelmed by the thought of decluttering when we can do these quick one-minute jobs and make a huge difference in our homes.
