No Spend Month – How To and Review

When we started decluttering my biggest fear was introducing more clutter into our home!  If you go through all of the work to clean everything out you don’t want to add more in.

I realized I needed to be extremely intentional with the purchases I am making.  Some people go on a no-spend year, but I am trying some no spend months throughout the year.

No-Spend Month

What is a no spend month?  The rules are up to you!  I decided my no spend month is all about not bringing more stuff into my home.

Some people make their no spend months more about saving money.  My goal was to not buy or bring anything into our home for the month of January.

It isn’t as easy as it sounds to not buy anything!

How can you Accomplish No Spend Month?

Make some rules for yourself.  I decided I wouldn’t go shopping at all except for food and necessities.  Do not go into any stores, even to have a look around.

What do you do when you think of something you “need”.  WRITE IT DOWN!  I keep a running list of items I think of.

That way at the end of the month I can review the list and decide if there is anything that I should buy or if the items can still wait.

Get an accountability partner! I teamed up with my fellow blogger friend Angela from Arrow Hill Cottage to not spend money together.  It does help to know that you are accountable to someone else or that you are on the journey together.

Find activities that do not involve shopping or updating your home.  I found myself working out, reading, and doing more art with my boys.

Did We Spend Money?

The month is over!  We did end up buying a few things.  My 4-year-old, Emmett, joined a flag football team, so we had to buy some shorts and a football.  I am ok with this purchase because I love that he is now in a sport.

Intentional living is all about getting the most out of life and enjoying the outdoors.  This sport is getting the whole family together and outside for 2 hours every week!

The other purchase is something that I have been thinking of for a long time.  I finally bought myself some lights for when I make my videos.  The weather has taken a turn for the worse and there have been a lot of dark cloudy days.

I decided that I needed some lighting.  These lights are something I have been thinking about for a long time, so the purchase was not rushed into.

For a family of 4 to buy 3 things for a whole month is really good in my opinion.  The interesting thing is during this month I still found a few things to declutter too!

My rule is when something comes in, something of equal or greater value must go.
