How To Avoid Impulse Buying and Save Money!

I have had a lot of questions on how to avoid impulse buying.  Today I am going to share one really good trick I use to avoid impulse buying.

How To Avoid Impulse Buying

A few days ago I found myself tempted to make an impulse buy.  We were in Target getting some necessities, when I noticed the kids 4th of July shirts.  Kids clothes are the easiest thing to buy on impulse.  They are so cute!  Keep reading for some tips on how to avoid impulse buying.

As I was looking at all of the kids shirts, I was thinking, we don’t need anything like this.  Part of me thought, “they are so cheap, why not just get the boys a cute shirt.”  Never mind the fact that we already have too many shirts at home.

I was debating for a really long time.  Then my husband said, “I thought we aren’t buying those one time theme t-shirts.”

This is when I implemented a trick I use all the time!

How To Avoid Impulse Buying Trick

This trick can work for almost anything you want to buy.  Put yourself into the future.  I like to imagine what I am going to think about this purchase 6 month to a year into the future.

Let’s just pretend I bought the 4th of July shirts.  In 6 months I know my boys are not going to be wearing these shirts, and I will be decluttering them to the thrift store.

I know a lot of you might be thinking, who cares about a $10 t-shirt.  Well if you are buying anything you don’t need or really want then it is a waste of money.  Imagine if every time you went shopping you came home with one or two extra things that were only around $10.

Pretty soon that money will really add up!  I don’t know about you but with a family I find myself at the store all the time.  Sometime 3 times a week.  Thirty dollars a week is a lot of money!

I also like to think about the future of my house.  If I am bringing 2 or 3 unnecessary items into my home per week, pretty soon I will have a lot of clutter.

I spent way too much time and energy decluttering my home to have that happen again!  Read about our year of decluttering here.

I also have a list of questions I like to ask myself before I make a purchase see  What Does a Minimalist Buy post.
