Morning Routine Tips and Tricks That Work!

Morning Routine Tips and Tricks

Today I am sharing 5 of my morning routine tips and tricks.  These simple tips will get your morning started on the right foot.

A great morning routine starts with the night before.  Doing a few simple things every night will set you up for a smooth morning.  After you do the same thing day after day it will eventually become a habit.

Once something is a routine you no longer have to think about it.  Today I am sharing 5 of my morning routine tips and tricks.  These simple tips will get your morning started on the right foot.

Night Time Routine Tips and Tricks

Before you go to bed think about what you want to deal with in the morning.  Waking up is hard enough, as we all know!  I like to set up my morning for success by doing a much as I can the night before. Read how I wake up at 5 am here.

  1. Clean any dishes in your sink and try to put them away.  This will ensure that you have an easy time making breakfast in the morning.
  2. Make your lunch for the next day.
  3. Set up your breakfast.  If know what you plan to eat get everything that you use to make it staged.
  4. Pick out your clothes for the next day.  Sometimes picking out an outfit can take a long time, by doing that the night before you will save time.
  5. Stage your morning.  Set everything you need to take with you by the door.

Work Backwards

To set up your schedule I like to work backward.  Figure out what time you need to arrive at your destination or what time you want your routine to end.  Then work backward!

Let’s just pretend my job starts at 8 am.  It takes me 30 minutes to get to work.  So I will have to leave my house at 730 am.  Now knowing I am leaving at 730 I can decide how much time it will take me to do everything I want before I leave.

Assign everything you intend to do in the morning a time limit.

Let’s say it takes me 30 minutes to make and eat breakfast, so you will subtract that time from 730.  Keep subtracting until you are done with everything you need to do and then you will magically have the time you should wake up.

Write The Routine Down

When starting any routine make sure you write it down!  This is a key component to actually being successful.  When you first start something it isn’t second nature yet so you will want to refer to your notes until your routine is set in stone.

Make the list simple, but jot down the intended timeline.  This will help with adjustments.  As you are implementing this new routine you can write the actual time it takes you to do everything and adjust your routine accordingly.

  • 6am wake up
  • 6am – 6:20 – get dressed and do makeup
  • 6:20 – 7am – make breakfast and eat
  • 7am – 7:30 am – check email, get lunch ready, clean up
  • 7:30 – Drive to work
  • 8am – Arrive at work

This is an example of a simple schedule, you can make it more detailed or even more simple.  It will help you stay on task until your routine has become a habit.

Set Alarm

Don’t forget to set your alarm or several alarms.  Here is how I wake up at 5 am and what I do the night before to get ready.  Setting an alarm is key!

I like to set 2 alarms.  My first alarm goes off at 5 am and my next alarm goes off at 6 am.  My biggest trick to get started is to put the alarm far enough away where you are forced to get out of bed to turn it off.

When I was in college I always had to do this because I had no reason to get up, therefore I would turn off the alarm and forget!  If you can’t trust yourself put the alarm out of reach.

Make Routine Adjustments

As you implement your morning routine make adjustments.  You might realize it only takes you 5 minutes to get dressed, especially if you pick out your clothes the night before.

This is why it is so important to make a few notes by the schedule you wrote out.

When starting a routine it will take some time before it becomes a habit.

I like to add a little extra time until the habit is completely set.  Eventually, your routine will be second nature and you will most likely have some extra time.
