20 Super Easy Things to Declutter:

1- Trash

Decluttering trash seems obvious, but sometimes it’s not like if you have kids. There can be a lot of junk/trash in their drawers.

By clearing this out, it will make room for the stuff they want to keep.

2 – Broken Things

I have fallen into this trap of keeping things because I will “fix them.” If I haven’t fixed something in 6 months or a year, it’s time to get rid of it.

Also, if I had not used that item for over a year, I might not have needed it anyway.

3 – Clothes That Don’t Fit

Declutter all the clothes that don’t fit unless there is a really good reason to keep them, such as if your weight fluctuates a lot or you just had a baby.

Of course, there are always a few reasons why we might hold on to a clothing item that doesn’t fit. But in general, holding onto clothes that don’t fit is bad for us.

It makes getting dressed harder, and we may feel bad about ourselves. Also, the clothing takes up valuable space.

4 – Books You Already Read

If I have read a book and will not refer to it in the future, I declutter it. This makes room for new books!

5 – Too Many Dishes

Sometimes, we have dishes we never use! Yes, they are in the back of the cupboard, so who cares. But why keep them?

Space is valuable, especially in the kitchen, and keeping dishes we never use wastes a lot of space.

6 – Cups

I don’t know how these cups multiply on their own. Where do they come from? My kids always bring home cups.

Usually, cheap junky cups that no one uses. So go through your cup area and declutter all the extra cups and mugs that never get used.

7 – Toys/Baby Stuff/ Kid Stuff That’s Rarely Used

Kids are constantly growing and evolving. I can declutter their stuff every month of the year. Whenever I do laundry, I look through it and see what they have grown out of or never wear.

Kids, just like adults, have their favorite toys and clothes that they always use, so why hold onto all the stuff they don’t use?

8 – Old Blankets/Sheets

Blankets and sheets are a very easy area to declutter. Essentially, declutter the linen closet.

Over time, we accumulate many sheets and blankets, and if we don’t get rid of the old stuff, our closets will soon look like a mess.

It will be harder to find things we do use and the closet won’t stay organized.

9 – Too Many Towels

This might be the minimalist in me, but I don’t think we need a ton of towels. I have about 2 per person and 2 extra towels for guests.

Towels take up a lot of room; if there are too many, it feels like we are storing them and never using them.

As soon as I get a new towel, I try to find an old one to declutter.

I found a huge box of cords in our garage. Since I hadn’t used any of them for over three years, I could easily get rid of the whole box.

Most of the time, we declutter something but later find the cord, and because we don’t know what it goes with, we save it.

Odds are if you have a box of cords you never use, the items they go with have already been decluttered.

12 – Purses/ Bags You Never Use

When I first started decluttering, I had about 20 purses and bags. Most of them were well-worn and not being used. I guess I saved them because some bags are expensive.

We feel as if we must keep them forever. Decluttering all those old purses was liberating. Now, I have one purse for daily use and one purse for going out.  When these wear out, I declutter them and replace them.

14 – Plastic Food Containers with Missing lids

We have a drawer of plastic food containers, mainly for when my kids take a snack to school. We use glass containers for our hot food and when we are at home.

We either use them for a trash bag or recycle them, and if the reusable bags are in good condition, they can be donated.
